100 days to go until ‘Bury Goes Biking’

PJM_7590To mark 100 days to go until the inaugural closed road cycling event for Bury St Edmunds, children from Abbots Green Academy celebrated with an afternoon of cycling skills, drills and games.

Excitement about the event has been building at the school, since one of their pupils, 8 year old Joseph Harden, won a competition to name it – Bury Goes Biking.

The free community cycling event will offer a unique opportunity for cyclists of all ages and abilities to cycle on traffic free, closed-off roads around the town centre and it’s expected that hundreds of families will take to the streets of Bury St Edmunds to enjoy the experience.

Ian Evans, Sport Development Manager at Abbeycroft Leisure said “Preparations are going well and we’re all looking forward to Bury’s first event of this kind. It was a pleasure to join the children at Abbots Green again to deliver some cycling sessions and they were very excited. We’re hoping schools will really get behind the free family event in September.”

Ang Morrison, Head Teacher, Abbots Green Academy said “We are always keen to work as part of the community. With most of our older children cycling to school, this was an ideal opportunity to provide our children with a fun packed afternoon but also ensure that they ride their bikes safely and responsibly.

We are incredibly proud of Joe in winning the competition and have used this event to further promote cycling throughout the school; we cannot wait to get involved!”

Participants will be encouraged to register in advance for the event in September, although registration will also be possible on the day, and they will be given the chance to raise money for St Nicholas Hospice.
